The Town of Valleyview has received an amendment to its existing Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) approval for the Valleyview Waterworks System (Approval No. 1248-04-02).

What is Changing?
The amendment allows the Town to use chloramination as a secondary disinfectant within the drinking water treatment and distribution system. Secondary disinfection helps maintain water quality as treated water travels through the distribution system to homes, businesses, and public facilities. Chloramination is a widely used treatment method that combines chlorine and ammonia to provide longer-lasting disinfection protection throughout the water distribution network.

Why is this Being Implemented?
This upgrade supports our ongoing efforts to:

  • Maintain safe and reliable drinking water.

  • Meet provincial regulatory requirements.

  • Improve long-term control of disinfection by-products.

  • Enhance the effectiveness of residual disinfection throughout the distribution system.

What Does this Mean for Residents?
Residents can continue to expect safe, treated drinking water that meets provincial standards. As the program is implemented, some residents may notice minor differences in the taste or odour of their drinking water. These changes are normal and do not affect water safety. The Town will continue to monitor water quality and operate the system in accordance with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas approval requirements.

Public Notice and Appeal Information
Under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, eligible persons may have the right to appeal this decision through the Alberta Environmental Appeals Board.

  • A Notice of Appeal must be submitted within 30 days of the date of the provincial notice, which is June 25, 2026.
