May 3–9 is Emergency Preparedness Week across Canada. Here in Valleyview, we know firsthand that spring and summer can bring unpredictable severe weather, and wildfire threats.
This year, the province of Alberta is focusing on the theme “In It Together,” reminding us that our strongest asset during an emergency is our community.
Research shows that communities with strong social connections experience reduced impacts and recover faster after a disaster. However, only 12% of Albertans report having a community support system in place. When disruptions occur, the most immediate help often comes from the people right next door.
This week, the Town of Valleyview encourages all residents to take these five steps to build resilience:
- Know the local risks: Understand the hazards that impact our region, particularly wildfires, high winds, and severe storms.
- Get and stay informed: Download the necessary apps and know where to find critical updates before an emergency happens.
- Make a household emergency plan: Minimize confusion by planning for evacuations, sheltering in place, and communication with family.
- Build a 72-hour emergency supply kit: Ensure you have the necessary supplies (water, food, flashlight, first aid) to be self-reliant if critical public services are temporarily disrupted.
- Make community connections: Get to know your neighbors. Identify who might need extra help and share your preparedness plans.
