Before starting any excavation or digging project—no matter how small—the Town of Valleyview Utilities Department, in Partnership with Utility Safety Partners, reminds all residents property owners, and contractors to submit a utility locate request.

Even common activities like planting trees, installing a fence, or building a deck can put you at risk of hitting buried utility lines such as gas, water, or sewer services.

Striking these lines can lead to:

How to Submit a Locate

All locate requests in Alberta are processed by Utility Safety Partners. You can submit your request online through their portal:

Please allow a few business days for your locate to be completed. Plan ahead before starting your project.

When Do I Need a Locate?

You MUST submit a locate request before starting any project that involves ground disturbance, including:

  • Building or replacing a fence
  • Digging post holes or trenches
  • Planting trees or shrubs
  • Excavating for decks, garages, or additions
  • Performing landscaping or grading

If you’re unsure whether your project requires a locate, it’s best to submit a request anyway.

Who Is Utility Safety Partners?

Utility Safety Partners is the organization responsible for processing utility locate requests in Alberta.

Their goal is to promote safe digging practices and prevent damage to underground infrastructure through education and coordination.

They are also the organization behind the Click Before You Dig campaign.
