Grease Belongs in the Trash, Not The Sewer

Did you know that most sewer blockages in Valleyview are caused by fats, oils, and grease? When grease is poured down the drain, it may seem harmless – but once it cools it hardens inside sewer pipes. Over time, it builds up and causes costly blockages.

Why It Matters

These blockages can:

  • Cause sewage to back up into homes and businesses.
  • Lead to expensive clean-up and repairs for property owners.
  • Damage the Town’s sanitary sewer system, increasing maintenance costs for everyone.

What You Can Do to Help:

  • Cool it. Scrape it. Can it. Allow grease to harden, then scrape it into your garbage.
  • Wipe greasy pans and dishes with a paper towel before washing
  • Pour used cooking oil into a sealed container and put it in the garbage
Remember

Under the Town of Valleyview’s Water and Sewer Bylaw, grease, oils, rags, wipes, and other non-flushable items must not be disposed of in the sewer system

Together, we can keep Valleyview’s sewers flowing and prevent costly blockages.
