Town of Valleyview’s – 2024 Water Shortage Plan

The Province of Alberta is in an extreme drought situation, currently stage 4 (out of 5) of a province-wide emergency level of its water management plan, with no encouraging signs of significant rainfall in the foreseeable future. “April showers” thus, may not bring to our community “May flowers” due to the El Nino global phenomenon, which is bringing with it hot dry weather with limited precipitation. Our Minister of Environment and Protected Areas is continually updating Municipalities on the Alberta drought situation and asking all Municipalities to develop and impose a water shortage plan now and start using less water in spring / summer 2024.
Due to the extremely dry conditions, the 2024 Water Shortage Plan will be implemented for the Town of Valleyview in order to ease the potential of a local water shortage which, if needed, would impose further water restrictions or a water ban. These measures are being instated now due to the Province’s concerns of Alberta’s current drought conditions, and the Town’s concerns of water quantities and source water accessibility in the future.
FLOWERPOTS & PLANTERS
- Restrictions: Zero supply (gifted, purchase), install (plant, hang), and maintain (water only) of any flowerpots and or planters throughout Town (i.e., downtown core, Town entrances).
- User effected: Municipality of the Town of Valleyview only; Others (businesses or residents) may follow suit.
- Town of Valleyview as a whole appreciate and thank past flowers basket sponsors for beautifying the Town’s downtown core. We look forward to 2025 in hopes that this drought situation improves.
- Effective: Entire 2024 season.
WATER RESTRICTIONS – TOWN RESIDENTS
- Full water ban: no watering lawns, gardens, trees; no washing automobiles, driveways, sidewalks, house exteriors; no filling pools, fountains, ponds; no use of water not used for human consumption.
- Effective: May 1, 2024
SPLASH PARK
- Restrictions: Full closure. Residents are encouraged to utilize local parks, river, and lakes.
- Effective: May 1, 2024
BULK WATER STATION
- Operations: Shut down at night / Operate by day to control use.
- User limitations: Farmers and acreage owners (potable) only (no oil field).
- Effective: When announced.
For the unforeseeable future, the Town of Valleyview will continue to monitor and re-evaluate our 2024 Water Shortage Plan and will post updates when conditions change, whether for better or worse. Note: For our Plan to be lifted or changed, it would take months (not days or weeks) of continuous rain in amounts greater than 10” for the drought to be alleviated.
